Current Age
- Your current age.
Sex
- Male or Female.
Smoker
- You would be considered a smoker if you smoked any cigarette, cigar, pipe, etc. in the past 12 months.
Retirement Age
- This is the age at which you will retire and cease to generate Earned Income.
Earned Income
- This would be your pre-tax income from employment inclusive of bonuses and commissions. If you own your own business, include dividends that you pay to yourself in addition to salary or commissions
Registered Investments
- We are looking for the total value of all Registered Investments that you hold.
- These would be all liquid investments in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, GICs, etc., that are held in a NON taxable account. Examples of these accounts would be RRSPs, RIFs, LIRAs, LIFs, and Defined Contribution RPPs and IPPs, etc.
- In these accounts, you are not responsible to pay taxes on any income, dividends or capital gains earned on these investments, if they remain in the accounts. You would only pay taxes if you make a withdrawal from the account.
Non-Registered Investments
- We are looking for the total value of all non-registered investments.
- These would include all liquid investments in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, GICs, etc., that are held in a taxable account. This would also include any private company shares i.e Operating or Holding companies
- In a non-registered account you would be responsible to pay taxes on any income, dividends or capital gains earned on these investments.
- Sometimes these accounts are called Cash Accounts, Margin Accounts, Joint Accounts, etc.
Home Equity
- This would be the current value of your house and other real estate minus any mortgages owing. For example, if you have a house worth $500,000, and hold a $200,000 mortgage, you would have $300,000 in home equity.
Annual Living Expenses
- This represents all of the expenses you would spend in a typical year. Please do not include any investments or savings. Most people tend to underestimate this amount. The calculator will index this figure by CPI until life expectancy.
Annual Pension Income (Exclusive of CPP and OAS)
- Corporate Pension Income (Exclusive of CPP and OAS)
- This is the annual amount that you would receive in pension from your former employer. Many of us do not have a Defined Benefit Pension (meaning a fixed amount every month). This is only for those who worked for many years with an employer that had this type of pension plan.
